Mallorca’s bishop Sebastià Taltavull joins church leaders in Orihuela, Alicante, Spain, to weigh what visits by the Pope can achieve — and why his words may not bring immediate change. The Diocese of Mallorca reported on Thursday, 22 October, that he had taken part in talks between Spanish and Portuguese bishops’ commissions for social communications.

The commissions looked at how major Church events bring people together, open conversations with wider society and create challenges for the Church’s work and communication. They drew on World Youth Day in Lisbon in 2023 with Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIV’s recent visit to Spain.

The commissions said a Pope’s presence gives the Church a chance to show its life and work. His messages may not change things straight away, they said, but can open new paths for the Christian community. The diocese added that large gatherings can bring together people from different backgrounds and help them build ties.
