Mallorca grape harvest passes 1.5 million kilos

Wineries under the Protected Geographical Indication Vi de la Terra Mallorca have harvested more than 1.5 million kilos of grapes since picking began. The organisation gave the update in Santa Maria, Mallorca, on Monday, 17 August 2026.

This year’s Mallorca grape harvest started on 21 July, around two weeks earlier than normal. Chardonnay, Giró Ros and Sauvignon Blanc account for most of the fruit collected so far, followed by Malvasía, Merlot and Syrah, an early-ripening variety used in rosé wines.

Heat brings fresher grapes and lower alcohol levels

High temperatures recorded since late June have shaped the harvest, according to Vi de la Terra Mallorca president Mateu Morro. He said alcohol levels were more moderate because the vines had produced less sugar, a process helped by differences between daytime and night-time temperatures that have not occurred.

White and rosé grapes are arriving fresher, with alcohol levels of 12 or 12.5 for lighter wines. Red varieties have yet to be harvested and require further ripening to develop both alcohol content and aromas.

Output expected to match last year

Morro said total production should be very similar to last year, although results will vary between grape varieties. Member wineries harvested more than 5.3 million kilos of grapes during the 2025 season.

The heat has limited fungal growth, leaving the grapes in particularly healthy condition, while preventive work and plant-health treatments have targeted pests including the green leafhopper. Although vines have not fully recovered from drought, good winter rainfall helped vineyards reach the harvest in a stronger position.

A total of 85 wineries across Mallorca produce wines carrying the Vi de la Terra Mallorca quality label. The designation includes 350 growers and 2,064 hectares of vineyards in production.
