Mallorca heat rises as 15 Spanish regions face alerts

Mallorca is set for rising temperatures on Friday, 4 September, with more than 35ºC possible locally despite the Balearic Islands being left off Spain’s heat-warning list. Across the country, 15 autonomous communities have heat alerts in place, according to the State Meteorological Agency, AEMET. Temperatures are likely to exceed 40ºC in low-lying areas of north-east Spain and the southern Atlantic side.

Ten communities reach the orange heat-warning level: Andalusia, Aragón, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, the Madrid region, Navarra, the Basque Country and La Rioja. The orange alerts cover places including Córdoba, Jaén, Seville, Barcelona, Lleida and Tarragona.

Most of Spain is expected to stay largely clear or only lightly cloudy. Low cloud may bring coastal mist or fog to parts of Galicia, Asturias, Alborán and the Strait.

A weather system approaching from the south-west is set to bring more middle and high cloud later in the day. Isolated showers or thunderstorms are possible in parts of the south-west and the Cantabrian area.

Highs will fall in northern Galicia and the south-west of the peninsula, but rise in the east, north-east, northern plateau and the archipelagos. For Mallorca and the other Balearic Islands, AEMET says the upward trend could bring local temperatures above 35ºC.
