Mallorca nears 35ºC as extreme fire danger returns

Mallorca’s interior is set to reach around 35ºC on Wednesday as a spell of intense, lasting heat begins across the Balearics. Civil Protection warns that wildfire danger will climb back to extreme levels, with dry afternoon storms also possible. The hot spell is expected to last at least until Friday.

The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, says a warm, dry air mass carrying suspended dust will bring a gradual rise in temperatures from Wednesday. It expects values unusually high for the time of year, along with very warm nights.

The central hours of the day will bring a significant risk, particularly for outdoor activity and vulnerable people, Aemet says. Civil Protection urges people to limit time in the sun, avoid prolonged physical effort then, drink regularly and keep an eye on children, older people, those who are ill and people living alone or in isolation.

The forecast becomes less certain from Friday because of a DANA, an isolated area of low pressure high in the atmosphere. Temperatures are likely to fall from Saturday, although the warm spell could continue for several more days at lower levels.

With fire danger rising, Civil Protection says cigarettes, rubbish and glass bottles must not be discarded in the countryside. It also advises against lighting fires or campfires in woodland and undeveloped land. Anyone spotting a fire at its start should call 112 immediately.
