Mallorca school projects backed by €70m programme

The Balearic Islands Ministry of Education and Universities will allocate €70 million to tendering and carrying out school projects on Mallorca and across the Balearic Islands from September to December. The plans, announced on 20 August, cover works already under way, schemes due to start and projects awaiting tender.

Mallorca schemes include extensions and refurbishments

Refurbishment work has begun at S'Alzinar primary school in Capdepera, Mallorca, with €2.2 million assigned. The ministry also expects to begin an extension at Josep Font i Tries secondary school in Esporles, budgeted at €2.6 million, and a €2.4 million refurbishment at Mestre Guillem Galmés primary school in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.

Extensions are scheduled for completion at Pare Pou primary school in Algaida, at a cost of nearly €600,000; Es Molins primary school in Andratx, for almost €1 million; Sant Marçal secondary school in Marratxí, for €5.5 million; and Ses Estacions secondary school in Palma, for €2.8 million.

Before the end of the year, the ministry expects to tender a €3.8 million expansion of cookery-training facilities at Guillem Colom Casasnoves secondary school in Sóller. Proposed extensions at Ponent school centre in Inca, valued at €3.5 million, and Son Basca school centre in Sa Pobla, valued at €5.4 million, remain under review and could also go to tender in the coming months.

Projects planned on Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera

On Menorca, the new integrated vocational training centre in Ciutadella, which has received €3.8 million, and the new primary school in Es Mercadal, budgeted at €8.4 million, are expected to be completed. A new tender is also planned for the Joan Mir i Mir adult education centre, with €4.4 million allocated.

On Ibiza, the €800,000 extension and gymnasium at Can Misses primary school in Eivissa is due to be finished in September. Work is also set to start on a €2.8 million expansion of Quartó de Portmany secondary school in Sant Antoni de Portmany, adding nine classrooms and improving accessibility.

By the end of 2026, the ministry plans to tender the new Can Cantó secondary school in Eivissa, valued at €14.5 million, and a €1.2 million refurbishment of Vara de Rei primary school in Sant Antoni de Portmany. The €4.8 million extension of Quartó des Rei secondary school in Santa Eulària remains under review, while the extension of Marc Ferrer secondary school on Formentera, costing nearly €2 million, is expected to be completed.
