Mallorca egg firms threaten action over salmonella warning

A warning against buying Son Perot eggs on Mallorca has brought a legal threat from two poultry firms. Avícola Son Perot and Avícola Ballester say they will file a conciliation claim on Thursday, 22 October, against Kike Gimeno, spokesman for the animal welfare group Satya. He had advised against buying the eggs because of possible salmonellosis, after animal welfare groups alleged negligence at two farms on the island.

The firms accuse the campaigners of making false and defamatory claims. They say they will pursue criminal action if Gimeno does not withdraw his warning immediately.

The dispute centres partly on an earlier finding of salmonella bacteria on a fan at a Son Perot farm. The firms say it was an isolated case and that they followed health procedures to eliminate it. Their statement does not report a current finding in the eggs.

According to the firms, a regional government department inspected all Son Perot facilities on Tuesday. They say the inspection reports for Es Caparó, Mirabó and Ses Cisternes were satisfactory, though some points needed correcting. The firms also say they know of no formal criminal complaint against them. On Tuesday, they contacted prosecutors to ask about any proceedings and consider further legal action.
