Mallorca water reserves fall to 38% after dry August

Mallorca’s water reserves fell from 39% to 38% in August, while Artà, Mallorca, moved into alert status. The Balearic Government’s Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle published the figures in Palma on 5 September. Across the Balearics, reserves also stood at 38%, one point below July and two below August 2025.

Menorca dropped from 34% to 33%. Eivissa saw the sharpest fall, from 42% to 37%.

Artà moves into alert status

All ten water-demand areas recorded a fall in their drought index during August. Artà entered alert status, while Tramuntana Sud moved from normal conditions to pre-alert.

Formentera is the only area still classed as normal. Menorca, Palma-Alcúdia, Tramuntana Nord, Tramuntana Sud and Eivissa are in pre-alert, while Artà, es Pla, Manacor-Felanitx and Migjorn are on alert.

Across the islands, 1.6% of the territory is in normal conditions, 60.8% is in pre-alert and 37.6% is on alert.

Dry August brings record heat

The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, says August was dry across the Balearics. Rainfall reached 9.6 litres per square metre, against a climate average of 21.4 litres per square metre — a 55% shortfall.

Mallorca recorded 8.8 litres per square metre. The Balearics’ average temperature reached 28.3 degrees Celsius, 2.7 degrees above average, making it the hottest August recorded on the islands since 1961.
