Manacor abattoir revamp hit as firm pulls out
Mallorca’s plan to revamp the municipal abattoir in Manacor is in doubt after the firm awarded the project pulls out. Manacor council, the Council of Mallorca and the Balearic Government meet on Thursday morning, 15 October, to consider how to recover the abattoir. They plan to meet again next week.
The council says the meeting was already planned as part of regular talks between the three authorities. They have been monitoring the situation for months since the firm withdrew. The council says the project has been shared from the start, with decisions taken jointly.
Paula Asegurado, Manacor’s councillor for economic promotion, says the abattoir is needed by Mallorca’s livestock farmers. She says the service would make producers’ work easier, reduce the difficulties caused by its absence and help farms remain viable. Mayor Ferran Montero says the Manacor abattoir is intended to serve the whole island. What happens to the revamp after the firm’s withdrawal remains undecided.
