Mallorca’s Manacor A&E wins Spanish hospital award
More than 80,000 emergencies in 2025: the accident and emergency (A&E) department at Manacor Hospital in Manacor, Mallorca, wins a Spanish award for the best service among mid-sized public hospitals. A hospital team collected the 2026 Best Spanish Hospitals award in Madrid on Wednesday. The prize is based on hospitals’ work in 2025, according to the regional health department.
More patients, more complex cases
Manacor’s A&E handled an average of more than 220 patients a day in 2025. Nearly 7,000 needed to stay in hospital after being assessed. The department provides hospital emergency care for the Llevant area, home to around 167,500 people. That number rises notably during the tourist season.
Staff say more patients now arrive with several health problems at once. An ageing population and more chronic illness mean those cases need more tests, more time and closer coordination between staff.
How the award was decided
The Best Spanish Hospitals awards compare hospitals of similar size using data on the care they provide, rather than opinions. For A&E departments, the assessment takes account of patients’ age, the severity of their condition and their health problem.
The Manacor team is now reviewing each step from a patient’s arrival to discharge or admission, aiming to shorten waits and improve care. The A&E department is continuing to operate during work to extend the hospital.
