Manacor flood risk prompts new action

Much of central Manacor, Mallorca, remains at risk of flooding in heavy rain despite a stream diversion built in 2004. On Wednesday, the town hall said it would formally ask the Balearic Government to draw up and carry out new water-control works. The move follows a council study of flood-prone areas.

Manacor wants a new model of how the stream’s flow moves through the diversion, saying some sections are insufficient when the maximum volume of water enters the channel. It is also seeking measures to ensure water can drain properly during intense rainfall.

The area around the water-treatment plant is a priority. The council says the stream could affect plots next to the site during heavy rain and possible flooding.

Among the proposals are widening parts of the diversion or building higher walls. Manacor also wants to widen the stretch running alongside the treatment plant and channel the pedestrian passage beneath the Ma-15.

Mayor Miquel Oliver said the proposals are based on technical findings and that he will formally ask the Balearic Government to act. According to the council, the works could reduce Manacor’s vulnerability to flooding and unblock further urban development projects.
