On Mallorca, a judge orders a man who killed his mother and brother in Manacor, Mallorca, to spend 38 years in a psychiatric hospital — but also directs his release until the ruling is final. The killings took place in April 2024. Europa Press reported the ruling on 9 October 2026.

What happened in Manacor

After taking drugs, the man suffered a psychotic episode. He beat his 82-year-old mother to death, dragged her body away and burned it. He then killed his brother, who had a disability, started a fire and confronted officers from Spain’s National Police during his arrest.

The man admitted what he had done at his hearing. The parties reached an agreement, so a jury did not have to be formed. Five expert assessments examined his health to help determine what care he needed and for how long.

Why the judge orders hospital care

The judge acquitted the man because his condition meant he was not criminally responsible. The ruling describes that condition as serious, chronic and incurable. All the experts involved in a joint assessment agreed that outpatient treatment would not be enough and that he needed psychiatric hospital care. The judge warned of the risk of extremely serious violence outside a protected setting.

The man must pay his sister €50,000 and three National Police officers a total of €2,520. The ruling can be appealed to the Civil and Criminal Chamber of the High Court of Justice of the Balearic Islands. Until it becomes final, the judge has ordered his release.
