Maó council loses €631,400 in funds for four projects
Maó, Menorca, loses €631,400 in funding for four council projects: the town hall fails to file the extensions needed to keep the money on time, according to the People's Party (PP). On Friday 16 October, PP spokeswoman Virginia Victori blamed mayor Héctor Pons for the loss. The money was due under the Island Cooperation Plan (PIC).
Four projects affected
The funding covered urgent work on the outside of the Sant Francesc complex and a replacement roof for the Hippodrome, Victori said. It also covered plans for s’Esplanada and the first phase of Binidalí’s rainwater drainage network.
PP demands an explanation
Victori rejected what she said was Pons’s description of the lapse as a simple administrative error. She also criticised his reference to three unfilled posts as an explanation for the missed deadline.
The PP wants Pons to explain publicly why the extensions were not filed on time, why residents were not told and what he will do to prevent it happening again. Victori said the Menorca Island Council would now have to seek other ways to fund the work. Whether the four projects can secure replacement funding remains unclear.
