Private cars block Maó port loading bays again

Private cars are repeatedly taking over loading bays at Maó port on Menorca, leaving delivery vehicles struggling to reach spaces set aside for them. The problem is most acute near the Marina and Club Marítimo, where restaurants and hotels have at times had normal supplies put at risk. On 31 August, the Menorca transport association Astrame raised the issue with Vicent Fullana, the Balearic Islands Port Authority delegate at the port.

Astrame says private cars and other vehicles not involved in deliveries are occupying the bays again and again. It also complained that the port police cannot always respond quickly, worsening the disruption for hauliers and nearby businesses.

Fullana acknowledged the problem, according to the association. But a shortage of staff at certain times of day makes full checks of the loading areas difficult, particularly during periods of higher tourist numbers.

The Balearic Islands Port Authority plans to automate some control work, freeing staff for other monitoring duties. It also intends to install cameras that photograph vehicles in the loading bays, aiming to deter improper parking and make the areas easier to supervise.

Astrame welcomed the authority's willingness to act and hopes the measures will improve the situation in the coming months.
