Four projects in Maó, Menorca, lose €631,400 in funding because the town council missed a filing deadline, the local People’s Party says. On Friday, 16 October, party spokeswoman Virginia Victori blamed mayor Héctor Pons for failing to submit the extensions needed to keep the money. The funding comes from the Plan Insular de Cooperación (PIC), an island cooperation scheme.

The projects include urgent work on the exterior of the Sant Francesc complex and a replacement roof for the Hipódromo. The money was also earmarked for plans for s’Esplanada and the first phase of Binidalí’s rainwater network.

Victori rejects what she says is Pons’s description of the lapse as a simple administrative error. She says three unfilled posts do not excuse the missed deadline.

According to Victori, the Menorca Island Council is looking for other ways to fund the projects. She welcomes that effort but wants Pons to explain publicly why the extensions were not filed on time, why residents were not informed and how he will prevent it happening again.
