24 and 19 years: prosecutor fights Ábalos and Koldo bid

Spain's Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office is asking the Supreme Court in Madrid on 1 September to reject José Luis Ábalos and Koldo García's attempt to overturn their convictions in the so-called mask case. The former minister Ábalos was sentenced to 24 years in prison and his former adviser García to 19 years.

Chief anti-corruption prosecutor Alejandro Luzón says their lawyers are raising arguments already considered and rejected in the court's final ruling. He argues that the applications have no separate basis and should fail.

Ábalos has asked for the June ruling to be annulled, his sentence suspended and his release. He and García have been held on remand since November 2025.

Ábalos says the judges relied on “non-existent corroboration” when they convicted him. The prosecution has now urged the court not to reopen the case through the applications filed by the two men.
