Mallorca mass tourism protest: government admits anger

A human chain against mass tourism is due to take place on Saturday as protesters send their demands to the Balearic Government on paper through the organisers’ volunteers. In Palma, Mallorca, government spokesman Antoni Costa said on Friday, 28 August, that the administration was aware of the public discontent behind the protest.

Costa defended the government’s tourism measures, saying it had capped the number of tourist places and abolished tourist flats. He also pointed to what he called the highest sanctions ever imposed over tourist accommodation.

The government has limited cruise-ship numbers and vehicle entry to Ibiza and Formentera, Costa said. He added that vehicle restrictions would also be extended to Menorca and Mallorca during the current term.

The Balearic Government said it respected freedom of expression provided demonstrations remained peaceful. Costa said ministers considered the demands they received and read submitted proposals.

He declined to comment on the case involving seven 26J demonstrators, saying there was little he could say while the police investigation was being handled by the Government Delegation.
