In Manacor, Mallorca, Ferran Montero takes over as mayor temporarily after Miquel Oliver resigns at an extraordinary council meeting on Thursday, 8 October 2026. The meeting begins at 19.00 with a speech from Oliver about his time in office and the work still to do. Councillors give him a long round of applause, then approve Montero’s appointment by an absolute majority.

Oliver remains a councillor but takes on fewer duties. He plans to focus on leading MÉS per Mallorca’s electoral list for the Council of Mallorca.

Montero, previously responsible for cultural promotion and education, is also his party’s candidate for mayor at the next municipal election. He calls the new role a “great responsibility” and says he will ask the governing team to keep up its standards until the end of its term. There is work to finish, decisions to make and commitments to honour, he says, while urging respect between government and opposition councillors.
