Menorca vehicle cap vote delayed by party clash
Menorca’s planned vehicle cap is on hold after a vote due on Monday was pushed back to Wednesday. The Consell de Menorca, the island council, was meant to debate a change to the Menorca Biosphere Reserve Law that would allow limits on vehicles entering the island. Més per Menorca says the delay has turned the measure into a party-political battle.
The PP governs the council without a majority and cannot rely on independent councillor Maite de Medrano for this vote. It now needs an agreement with left-wing parties. PSOE reportedly asked for 48 hours to study the PP proposal.
PSOE wants tighter restrictions than those first proposed by the PP. Its demands include stopping second-home owners and people from elsewhere in the Balearics from bypassing the vehicle cap, as well as strict checks on car-hire firms to prevent legal loopholes.
Més per Menorca says the 2023 Menorca Biosphere Reserve Law already gives the council legal cover to control vehicle entry, so there is no need to reopen it. The party wants the limit operating next summer and will vote against the PP’s proposed legal change.
Its spokeswoman, Noemí García, said the argument should centre on when an effective cap starts, rather than who is to blame. She said 2027 must be the year that vehicle limits become a reality on Menorca.
