On Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, MÉS per Mallorca is part of an election alliance without Podemos: talks to bring the party in end without a deal on Friday, 16 October. The alliance is preparing to contest Spain’s general election on 29 November.

MÉS per Mallorca belongs to Ara Més, a federation that also includes Més per Menorca and Ara Eivissa. Ara Més has agreed to stand alongside Esquerra Unida and Sumar. Its members backed the pact at a meeting on Thursday evening, while talks with Podemos continued through Friday.

The two sides disagree over why those talks failed. Sources from Ara Més point to Podemos’s dispute at national level with Frente Amplio, an alliance that includes Sumar and Izquierda Unida.

Lucía Muñoz, Podemos’s coordinator in the Balearic Islands, gives a different account. She says her party had asked for hours to sign up. At 23.00, she says, MÉS requested details of Podemos’s legal representative. At 23.15, she says, Podemos was told that Izquierda Unida would not agree to a pact with it.
