Mallorca’s MÉS backs a pact for the 29 November Congress election, but Podemos remains outside it. At a meeting in Palma, Mallorca, on Thursday 15 October, MÉS per Mallorca approves the coalition agreed by Ara Més, Sumar and Esquerra Unida in the Balearic Islands. Of the 110 people attending, 89% vote in favour, MÉS per Mallorca says.

Podemos wants second place

The parties want one ballot for the Balearic progressive left, but talks with Podemos have yet to produce a deal. Podemos wants second place on the candidate list and a rotating candidacy. Ara Més coordinator Carme Gomila urges it to join before Friday’s deadline for registering coalitions with the electoral board.

MÉS per Mallorca’s Lluís Apesteguia and Més per Menorca’s Josep Castells resist those demands. They say the lead candidate should come from the federation that includes their parties and Ara Eivissa.

Senate deal is not yet signed

The assembly also backs a joint Senate bid with the PSIB. MÉS says the plan covers five of the six senators elected from the Balearic Islands on open lists. The PSIB has already chosen its Mallorca Council spokesperson, Catalina Cladera, as its candidate for Mallorca; parties of the alternative left could pick at least one more candidate.

The pact still needs confirmation. PSIB sources say it is close to being settled, while party leader Francina Armengol expects joint candidacies for Mallorca, Menorca, Eivissa and Formentera to go ahead.
