Mallorca tourism: MÉS seeks 130,000 tourist bed cuts

MÉS per Mallorca wants 130,000 tourist beds removed on Mallorca in the medium term, making a sharp reduction in visitor accommodation central to its political agenda.

The party set out the plan in Palma, Mallorca, on 1 September. Miquel Oliver, its candidate for the island council, said the cuts were needed to tackle tourist overcrowding.

Cutting tourist accommodation

Oliver also wants to bring back the 2x1 rule for private exchanges of tourist places. MÉS further proposes that public bodies again buy obsolete tourist places and take them out of use.

The measures are part of the party’s programme for the political period before the 2027 regional, island and local elections.

Homes and the cost of living

David Pujol, MÉS’s candidate for Palma City Council, called access to housing the party’s top priority. He said Palma does not need more homes built, but needs its existing homes made available to the public.

MÉS proposes preventing non-residents from buying homes. Pujol accused the PP of having no answer to rising house prices, tourist overcrowding and pressure on transport.

General coordinator Lluís Apesteguia also called for a Balearic minimum wage and a differentiated rate of VAT. The party wants the regional government to double the Sustainable Tourism Tax, known as ITS, and put more money into agriculture, culture, innovation and research.
