100-plus arrivals: Balearics demand migrant-risk report

More than 100 migrants arrived on the coasts of the Balearic Islands over the weekend, when two bodies were also found at sea. On 7 September in Palma, Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic Government, demanded that Spain’s government hand over warnings of a high risk of further migrant arrivals and explain its response. She said the regional government has received no official information.

Prohens said she formally asked for the warnings and details of any protective measures on Friday. She accused Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of slighting people on the islands and called for transparency from Madrid.

She also said Sánchez had referred in parliament to the Balearics while addressing the grave situation in Ceuta. Prohens described the remark as an “insult” to island residents.

The PP has asked the Balearic Parliament to call in Alfonso Rodríguez, the Spanish government’s delegate in the islands. It wants him to set out what information he holds and what measures have been taken in response to reports by the State security forces mentioned by Sánchez.

PP deputies and senators from the Balearics are also preparing to seek answers in Spain’s Congress and Senate. Prohens said migrant arrivals were not only continuing but increasing, and described the weekend as critical for the islands.
