In Palma, Mallorca, the Balearic government is pressing Spain’s incoming delegate in the islands to tackle migrant boat arrivals along their coasts from his first day in office. Government spokesman Antoni Costa made the call on Friday, 16 October, after a meeting of the regional cabinet. Pere Joan Pons is expected to replace Alfonso Rodríguez on 27 October.

Costa also wants Pons to do what he can to fill about 1,000 vacant posts in the National Police and Civil Guard. He called on Pons to push ahead with around 1,300 homes planned for Son Busquets in Palma and Can Escandell in Eivissa. Costa declined to give his view of the incoming delegate himself.
