Balearics migrant warning: Prohens demands answers

Marga Prohens has demanded immediate answers from Spain’s government over police reports warning of possible mass migrant arrivals on the Balearic coast. The Balearic Islands president made the demand on Thursday, 3 September, after Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed Congress. She says the regional government was not told about the warning.

Sánchez had rejected claims that the National Police had warned of a high risk in Ceuta a week earlier. He confirmed that a report exists, but said it concerned only sea arrivals to mainland Spain and the Balearics, not the border at Ceuta.

Prohens called for urgent steps to reinforce the state security forces. She also wants Frontex to be activated for the protection, control and defence of maritime borders.

The regional leader said the islands were already facing an unprecedented migration crisis and could not wait for mass arrivals by sea before acting. The Balearics, she said, are Spain and Europe’s southern border and must not be left unprotected.
