Mallorca: PP says Madrid hid migration risk alert

The Balearic government was not told about an alert warning of a high risk of migrants arriving by sea, the PP says. Its parliamentary spokesman, Sebastià Sagreras, made the accusation in Palma on Friday, 4 September, after meeting regional president Marga Prohens. He said Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had not raised the reports when he met Prohens in Palma at the end of July.

Sagreras called the alleged omission “extremely serious”, saying the warning directly affected public safety in the Balearics. The claim comes after Sánchez addressed Congress over Thursday’s crisis in Ceuta.

Sánchez rejected the suggestion that the National Police had warned a week earlier of a high risk in Ceuta. But, according to the PP, he confirmed that the report existed and said it concerned only sea arrivals to mainland Spain and the Balearics.

PP demands Balearics plan

The PP says it will back calls for a plan tailored to the Balearics, more staff and equipment for Spain’s state security forces, and a permanent presence by Frontex, the European border agency, on the maritime border.

Sagreras urged other parties in the Balearic parliament to support those demands. He also called on the Mallorca-born secretaries of state Aina Calvo, for Security, and Rosario Sánchez, for Tourism, to press the case for the islands within the Spanish government.

The party now wants to know what Sánchez’s government knew, when it knew it, why Prohens’ administration was not informed and what action it took in response to the warning.
