Menorca mini-tsunami alert: sea could swing 0.9 metres

Coastal shops and homes on Menorca are being told to guard against seawater reaching them on Wednesday, after an orange alert was raised for a mini-tsunami.

The General Directorate for Emergencies has moved the warning to orange, or IG-1 under the Meteobal plan. The alert concerns rissagas, sea-level swings often called mini-tsunamis.

The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, has kept a yellow warning in place for Menorca from 08.00 to 23.59. It expects the sea level to fluctuate by up to 0.9 metres.

Tables, chairs and other items near the coast should be moved away in case the water carries them off. Businesses and homes close to the waterline should be protected against possible seawater ingress.

People should stay away from seafront promenades, breakwaters and cliffs, where the force of the water could sweep them away. Water sports should be avoided and boats secured.

The orange IG-1 level is used when weather information points to an imminent adverse event with a high likelihood of risk to people and property. It also puts emergency resources on pre-alert for mobilisation while affected local areas are monitored beyond municipal boundaries.
