Mini-tsunami sends Ciutadella sea swinging 140 cm

A mini-tsunami makes the sea in Ciutadella harbour, Menorca, swing by about 140 centimetres around midnight. Bays and ports across Menorca have recorded the sudden sea movements over the past 30 hours. The largest hit Ciutadella harbour.

The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, expects further swings of 40 to 70 centimetres during the morning. By late afternoon, they could again exceed one metre.

The phenomenon is known as a rissaga, commonly called a mini-tsunami. Homes and businesses close to the coast should protect themselves against possible seawater entering, while tables, chairs and other loose items should be removed so they are not swept away.

People should keep away from seafront promenades, breakwaters and cliffs, where the force of the water can drag people away. Water sports should be avoided and boats secured.
