Menorca mini-tsunami alert: sea may swing 1.5m

Menorca’s coastal shops and homes face possible seawater flooding from midnight on Thursday 27 August, when an orange mini-tsunami warning begins. The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, says the sea may swing by up to 1.5 metres until 13.59. The Directorate General of Emergencies has also raised Menorca’s alert to orange under the Meteobal plan’s IG-1 level.

A rissaga, also known as a mini-tsunami, can push seawater into premises near the coast. Authorities say tables, chairs and other loose items should be removed so the water cannot carry them away.

People should keep away from seafront promenades, breakwaters and cliffs, where the force of the water can sweep people away. Water sports should be avoided and boats secured.

The IG-1 alert is used when weather information points to an imminent adverse event with a high likelihood of danger to people and property. It also triggers a pre-alert for emergency resources to be mobilised.
