Menorca mini-tsunami warning: sea swings up to 1.5 metres

Menorca faces an orange mini-tsunami warning from midnight until 13.59 on Thursday, with the sea expected to swing by up to 1.5 metres. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, has issued the alert for rissagas — sudden sea-level swings often called mini-tsunamis. The Directorate General of Emergencies has also raised its Meteobal plan alert to orange, known as IG-1.

Shops and homes close to the shoreline should be protected against seawater reaching inland. Tables, chairs and other loose items should be moved if the current could drag them away.

People are urged to stay away from seafront promenades, breakwaters and cliffs, where the force of the water could sweep people away. Water sports should be avoided and boats secured.

The IG-1 level is used when forecasts point to an imminent hazardous event with a high likelihood of danger to people and property. It includes a pre-alert to mobilise resources, while affected areas remain under monitoring beyond their individual municipalities.
