Mallorca motorhome fire guts three; man remanded
Mallorca has three gutted motorhomes at the Son Hugo car park in Palma: a court orders a man held in pre-trial custody over the fire. The blaze began in a parked motorhome shortly before 13.00 and spread to at least two more. One person suffered burns to an arm while trying to move a motorhome away.
The man was arrested on Wednesday. According to the Spanish National Police investigation, the owner of the motorhome where the fire began had allegedly assaulted his partner shortly beforehand. She called him while receiving medical care to tell him what had happened. Investigators believe the row may have triggered the fire; there had been similar incidents before.
A butane gas cylinder was identified as the source of the fire. People in two other motorhomes parked at the ends escaped safely. Neither vehicle caught fire, though heat damaged one of them.
Police patrols and Palma firefighters attended, and the firefighters put out the blaze. Palma City Council has ordered the immediate removal of butane cylinders and other flammable material from the outdoor area.
