Mallorca's Munar fights back in five-set US Open win

Mallorca's Jaume Munar fights back from two sets down to beat France's Terence Altmane at the US Open in New York on Sunday. The five-set victory, sealed after nearly five hours, sends the Balearic player into the second round. He will face another Frenchman, 26th seed Arthur Rinderknech.

Munar lost the opening two sets 6-7(5), 3-6 before taking charge with a 6-1 third set. He held firm in the fourth-set tie-break, winning it 7-6(4), then took the decider 7-5 to avoid a third tie-break.

Dani Mérida also made a winning start, beating Hungary's Marton Fucsovics 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 45 minutes without allowing a break point. Croatia's Marin Cilic or Russia's Andrey Rublev await him in round two.

Pablo Carreño, however, went out after losing 6-1, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-2 to Czech player Jiri Lehecka. Carreño had two set points at 6-5 in the second set but could not take them before Lehecka won the tie-break.
