Mallorca adds 10,680 pools as building keeps rising

Mallorca has added 10,680 built swimming pools in ten years, according to a study presented in Palma on Monday, 31 August. Terraferida says that is 1,166 pools a year, or 23 each week, between 2015 and 2024. Its representative, Mateu Vic, said the construction trend is increasing.

The group called the figures worrying, arguing that pools can raise a home's value and fuel speculation.

Nearly a third built on rural land

Thirty per cent of the new pools were built on rural land. The remaining 70 per cent went up on urban land, Vic said.

Palma has the highest number of new built pools, followed by Marratxí, Calvià, Llucmajor, Santanyí, Manacor, Campos, Felanitx, Alcúdia and Pollença. Vic said Palma's lead was expected because it has the largest population, with neighbouring municipalities following the capital.

Inca bucks the pattern

Inca stands out because its population might suggest it would rank much higher, Vic said. But the town receives little tourism, so fewer built pools went up there during the period.

Most of Inca's new pools were built outside the urban area.
