Ibiza's new school gets land as demand for places grows
Eivissa, on Ibiza in the Balearic Islands, moves closer to a new secondary school as demand for places grows. On Friday, 16 October 2026, the Balearic Government accepts the town council’s transfer of a plot for IES Can Cantó. The plan calls for 16 units for compulsory secondary education and six for Bachillerato, the later stage of secondary education.
The land must be used to build and run the school for 30 years, under terms agreed by Eivissa town council on 26 March 2026. Building the school and securing its authorisation must take no more than five years from the formal decision accepting the transfer, though that deadline can be extended.
Last week, the government designated the project a strategic investment for the Balearic Islands. That allows it to use a new legal framework intended to speed up the process; the school had already been recognised as a project of regional interest. Spending on the project is capped at 15.9 million euros.
