Mallorca's Nigerian priests in focus as bishop visits

Mallorca's Nigerian priests are at the heart of a visit by Bishop John Ifeanyichukwu Okoye of Awgu, Nigeria, from 9 to 16 October. He met Mallorca's bishop, Sebastià Taltavull, and visited parishes and places of religious and historical significance. The Diocese of Mallorca said the visit also highlighted the work of priests from Awgu on the island.

Priests link Mallorca and Awgu

For Okoye, the priests' work is about more than filling staffing gaps. He sees it as a way for the two churches to share their faith. He wants Awgu and Mallorca to stay in regular contact and continue exchanging ideas on church work, including priestly training, work with young people and support for families.

Concern for families in Nigeria

Okoye also spoke about insecurity and violence in parts of Nigeria. He voiced concern for families who have lost loved ones and communities forced from their homes. Economic hardship, unemployment and emigration are further difficulties, particularly for young people, he said.

His message for Mallorca's churchgoers was to keep welcoming priests from other countries. He asked those priests, in turn, to approach the local culture with respect.
