Mallorca 0-3 nursery row: PSIB says councils lose out

A row over nursery pay has broken out in Algaida, Mallorca, with the PSIB accusing the Balearic Government of favouring concerted 0-3 nurseries over municipal ones. The party says a new decree will secure educators’ wages at concerted centres from September, while municipal nurseries receive no matching measure. Socialist representatives raised the issue on Monday at the Flor de Murta nursery in Algaida.

Amanda Fernández, secretary general of the Socialist Federation of Mallorca, said educators at concerted nurseries will be able to receive their pay directly from the Ministry of Education and Universities. She said municipal nurseries had been left without an equivalent arrangement.

Councils face the extra cost

Fernández said town halls are already paying a supplement to improve educators’ working conditions. She criticised the PP for voting against motions calling on the ministry to help councils meet that extra cost.

The PSIB argues that the government is taking on the payroll of concerted nurseries while putting off action on municipal centres and their staff conditions. Fernández also backed the Xarxa 0-3 network and the STEI, CCOO and UGT unions, which want a regional agreement.

Call for equal treatment

Algaida mayor Marga Fullana said every nursery should receive the same treatment, regardless of how it is run. She said the added cost was a major burden for councils, even though they support better conditions for nursery staff.

Fullana called for clearer involvement from the Ministry of Education and Universities in meeting those costs.
