Mallorca gets 1,044 nursery places this school year

Four new classrooms at CEIP Jaume I in Palma provide 72 nursery places for children aged up to three this school year. The Balearic Islands education department will manage 1,687 places across the islands, including 1,044 on Mallorca. More than €35,000 was invested in fitting out the four rooms.

Education minister Antoni Vera visited the Palma school on Tuesday and said the department is taking over ten new nursery centres, known locally in Catalan as escoletes. These include Son Gibert and Son Dameto in Palma, CEIP Joan Mas in Pollença, Can Cantó and Sa Blanca Dona in Eivissa, and EI Son Carrió in Sant Llorenç des Cardassar.

32 centres across the Balearics

The 1,687 places are split between Mallorca, with 1,044, Menorca, with 178, and Eivissa, with 465. They are spread across 32 centres — 28 more than in the 2023/2024 school year.

Vera said the government takes over centres built by Balearic town halls and runs them with public places. He said the aim is full free provision for all families with children aged up to three, with more public places to be created where they are needed.
