30 in Mallorca home as overcrowding probe begins

Up to 30 people were living at times in an unfinished property in Manacor, Mallorca, according to those found there by police. Six people had slept beneath a covered patio, while rooms inside were sometimes split off with curtains. National Police and the Balearic Government’s Housing Inspection Service announced the case on 6 September after an inspection in August.

Officers found and identified seven occupants during the visit. The property had up to six divided rooms, several kitchens, three shared bathrooms and holes and damage in several areas. A staircase had building supports serving as a handrail.

Rent charged per person

The occupants told officers they paid the owner between 80 and 100 euros each. The owner allegedly collected rent regardless of how many people were in a room, including those sleeping under the outdoor cover.

Official property records list 90 square metres of living space, 103 square metres of storage and 35 square metres of parking. Inspectors said all 228 square metres were being used as living space.

Possible fine of up to 90,000 euros

The Balearic Government has started proceedings that could lead to a penalty case against the owner. Under the Balearic housing law, severe overcrowding can bring a fine of between 30,001 and 90,000 euros.

The Housing Ministry said this was not the first overcrowded home uncovered on Mallorca.
