Palma seals €29m packaging waste deal for Balearics
Responsible for this content: Frank Menze
€29 million is set to help cover the cost of handling packaging waste across the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Government and Ecoembes signed the agreement in Palma, Mallorca, on 2 September 2026. It covers waste collection, transport, sorting and treatment by municipal and island councils.
The deal creates a compensation system tailored to the islands and the cost of managing this waste. Payments to councils will depend on how much packaging waste they handle and the services they provide.
The new financial rules apply retrospectively from 1 January 2024, allowing councils to claim compensation for services provided since that date.
