Palma Airport assistance: MPs call for more staff

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Palma Airport on Mallorca needs more staff to help passengers with reduced mobility and disabilities board and leave planes, the Balearic Parliament says. On Thursday, every party backed a call for airport operator Aena to increase assistance staff across the Balearic Islands’ airports. People’s Party MP Mate Torrent brought the proposal to the parliament’s Social Affairs Committee.

Shorter queues and clearer routes

The committee wants the service improved so passengers do not face long queues or problems when boarding and disembarking. It also called for a way to report problems and raise objections, accessible, comfortable waiting areas with air conditioning for passengers and their companions, and the retention of current staff.

At Palma Airport, building work has changed routes to the exit for months. The parliament wants Aena to improve signs and information so people can find their way.

Care services face long waits too

In a separate proposal brought by Socialist MP Omar Lamin, the committee urged the Balearic government to strengthen home help, remote assistance and services that support independent living. Vox voted against that call. The committee also flagged long waits for essential care services.

One part of the proposal failed after the People’s Party joined Vox in opposing a call to recognise the expanded rights brought by reforms to care and disability laws.
