Mallorca council says no to Palma airport capacity boost

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca’s island council opposes a plan to increase capacity at Palma de Mallorca Airport: on Thursday, 8 October 2026, it calls on Spain’s government to rethink it. The proposed increase appears in DORA III, an airport regulation document from operator Aena. The council wants airport investment to match the Balearic Islands’ strategy for sustainable tourism and land use.

The council approved all three parts of a motion from the PP. The PSIB abstained on two parts, while Vox voted against one.

The council also backs a law that would give the islands a role in running their airports. The Balearic Parliament approved the law, but it lapsed after Spain’s parliament was dissolved while the bill awaited consideration in Congress. The council also supports a request for Aena president Maurici Lucena to appear and explain the company’s plans for airports across the Balearic Islands.
