Palma band row erupts at Ceuta support rally

Palma’s municipal band played at a support rally for Ceuta in Plaça de Cort on Wednesday night. On Thursday, MÉS per Palma accused Mayor Jaime Martínez’s administration of using the musicians in a party-political event. The party says PP and Vox turned the gathering into a political mobilisation.

The Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces called for the rally, MÉS said. But councillor Miquel Àngel Contreras said Martínez had used public institutions and resources for party politics.

‘The band belongs to Palma’

Contreras said the municipal band was Palma’s band, not “the soundtrack” of PP or the far right. Its players were public professionals who deserved respect, he added.

MÉS called it especially serious that Palma City Council had provided municipal resources while the mayor led the call for the event.

MÉS points to 141 deaths

The party said the events in Ceuta were above all a humanitarian crisis. It cited Caminando Fronteras, which has documented 141 deaths during the crisis that began on 30 July.

Contreras said Ceuta needed public resources, responsibility and a humanitarian response. It did not need, he said, a contest between PP and Vox.
