Mallorca lights Palma’s Palau blue for Ceuta protest

Palma’s Palau del Consell will light its façade blue on 2 September as Mallorca signals support for Ceuta. Consell de Mallorca president Llorenç Galmés will also join a protest outside town halls across Spain. Both actions follow the mass entry of migrants into the autonomous city on 31 July.

Galmés said Mallorca stood with Ceuta and called for Spain’s borders and unity to be defended. The Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces has called the demonstrations.

The island president said the arrivals showed the failure of Spanish government policy. He also criticised Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, accusing him of going on holiday during the crisis.

Galmés repeated his opposition to distributing unaccompanied migrant children from Ceuta among other regions. Centres run by the Consell de Mallorca are overcrowded, he said, and the island cannot take more children from elsewhere in Spain.

He said Mallorca’s stance was about capacity, not a lack of solidarity.
