Association manager Mercè Peñaranda says spending per room also rose, by 8.3%. The association calls the summer season a positive one. Its president, Francisco Serrano, says guests book closer to their stay and have become more demanding.

The association welcomes a direct New York flight due to start in March, along with routes to Montreal and Abu Dhabi. Serrano says the new connections are intended to add to traditional markets, not replace them.

Winter is the next challenge. Serrano puts November occupancy at 50%, while average activity falls to between 30% and 35% from January to March. The association plans events and activities aimed at drawing local people into Palma’s hotels during the quieter months.
