Palma housing row: MÉS says 1,200 homes never built

Palma, Mallorca: MÉS per Palma says mayor Jaime Martínez has built none of the 1,200 homes he promised, while thousands of families cannot afford rent. On Monday, 19 October, the party’s mayoral candidate, David Pujol, says young people are being driven to leave the city. He also accuses the mayor of failing to deliver car parks and public facilities.

Homes and Son Busquets

Pujol says Martínez inherited projects ready to move forward but has not finished them. He points to the stalled housing project at Son Busquets, blaming a deadlock between the central government and Palma’s city council.

Car parks and public buildings

Martínez promised 26 car parks with 4,000 new spaces in 2024, Pujol says, but work on them has yet to materialise. MÉS also says projects begun under the previous council have stopped or slowed, including plans to turn the Can Ribas factory into a cultural centre, renovate Plaza Mayor and provide rehearsal rooms for bands.

The party says commitments to buy the Iris cinema in El Vivero and the Can Pesquet plot in Son Sardina for public services remain outstanding. Pujol contrasts that with what he calls the mayor’s speed in buying GESA and advancing a tourism project. At the next council meeting, MÉS plans to seek a formal rebuke of Martínez, timetables for the projects and explanations for the delays.
