Mallorca protest: official to quit with police probe open
Mallorca: Police action after a protest against mass tourism in Palma left dozens injured and one person detained, activists say. Now Alfonso Rodríguez, the Spanish government’s representative in the Balearic Islands, plans to resign before an inquiry into that action is complete. Tens of thousands joined the demonstration on 26 July 2026.
In a post on X, the campaign group Menys Turisme, Més Vida welcomed his decision to leave. But it said the promised inquiry had made no progress and nobody had accepted responsibility for what happened.
Rodríguez said on Tuesday that he would leave soon to focus on his bid to become mayor of Calvià on Mallorca. The day after the protest, he asked José Antonio Puebla, the National Police chief in the Balearic Islands, for a prompt report on why officers had moved in. Rodríguez described their action as “violent and excessive”.
At the time, he denied ordering the police action and ruled out resigning, despite calls to do so from MÉS per Mallorca and Menys Turisme, Més Vida. He said he would keep working to establish what happened and protect the right to demonstrate.
