Palma protest: seven accused as organisers blame police

Seven demonstrators have been accused of public disorder and damage after Palma’s 26 July protest against tourist overcrowding. On 28 August, one of the protest’s organisers said riot police triggered the unrest, not peaceful marchers. The group, Menys turisme més vida, says people were attacked as they were leaving.

The claim follows a National Police report naming the seven demonstrators. Menys turisme més vida says the report is being used to justify what it calls a heavy-handed police response against peaceful participants.

The organisers say they had held mediation talks with officers, but police still attacked demonstrators without justification and stopped the reading of a second manifesto.

They also say they have received no information about an investigation into the police operation announced by government delegate Alfonso Rodríguez. The platform is continuing work on a collective complaint for people it says were assaulted by police that night.

Videos circulated in the following days show the officers’ violent intervention and poor conduct, the organisers say. They maintain that the unrest arose because riot police were present, rather than through the actions of peaceful demonstrators.
