Palma, Mallorca: rental supply is down 6% since two national decree-laws were approved, Balearic housing minister José Luis Mateo says. On Tuesday, 13 October, he faces nine questions on housing in the Balearic Parliament as opposition parties demand limits on rents. Mateo rejects rent limits and says his department is working to bring more affordable homes onto the market for residents.

Socialist PSIB spokesman Iago Negueruela says Mateo is responsible for housing and has done nothing to stop rents rising over the past three years. Socialist MP Àlex Pitaluga accuses the government of favouring luxury in Eivissa, Ibiza, where he says most residents cannot afford the prices. The question, he argues, is not just whether homes are built, but who they are built for.

Mateo blames housing problems on policies from the two previous legislative terms and what he calls the Spanish government's failure to act. He also says evictions are a consequence of national laws. The opposition wants rent limits; Mateo is sticking with his plan to increase the supply of affordable homes.
