Palma, Mallorca: people are being moved out of makeshift settlements in flood-prone areas as the city prepares for the arrival of the Adam storm system on Monday. The city fears that torrents could swell. It has opened the Germans Escales sports centre to shelter those affected.

All municipal parks and gardens, along with Paseo Sagrera, have been closed since 18.00 on Sunday, 18 October, Palma City Council says.

Schools and city offices close

Sports activities and outdoor events have been cancelled. The Balearic Islands government says schools will close on Monday.

Municipal buildings will also stay shut. Palma’s citizen service offices will not see people in person, so registry applications must be submitted online.

Tunnels and low roads flagged for flooding

The city has marked places where water could collect, including the tunnel approaches on Avenida de Alexandre Rosselló near El Corte Inglés and on Via Alemania near Jeroni Antich. Other marked spots include low-lying road sections and junctions.

Palma advises people to avoid unnecessary journeys and not to cross torrents or flooded ground, whether on foot or by car. It also advises against parking where water could collect or entering basements and garages at risk of flooding. If water enters a home, the city says to go upstairs and avoid lower floors.

The council is monitoring the weather and says it will announce any changes to its measures. It asks people to follow official updates and emergency-service instructions.
