Palma thefts fall 10% as 450 people are arrested
Thefts and violent robberies in Palma, Mallorca, are down by about 10% this summer compared with last year, police say. Officers have detained 450 people over offences targeted by the National Police’s summer operation. The campaign began in mid-May and is due to end on 30 September.
Javier Martín de la Torre, head of the Response Operational Group (GOR) at the Balearic Islands Police Headquarters, gave the provisional update on Thursday. He said the fall followed measures taken during the operation, but did not give details of them.
The police still have a concern: thefts from inside vehicles. Cars parked on public streets, in car parks and in garages remain affected.
Martín de la Torre said the summer operation was close to historic in its results and hoped the downward trend would hold until it ends. The current figures remain provisional, with the campaign still running.
