Mallorca neighbours fight six-hour Palma music night

Neighbours in Palma, Mallorca, are opposing six hours of music planned in Sa Feixina Park on 4 September. The fiesta for Mare de la Déu de la Salut is due to run from 20.00 until 02.00, with a DJ included. The Barri Cívic de Santa Catalina i es Jonquet neighbourhood association says the event will hit hundreds of homes facing the park.

The group is not challenging the festivities themselves. Its objection is to staging music for six hours in a park surrounded by homes, which it calls disproportionate and insensitive.

It wants Palma City Hall to rethink the timetable, set an end time compatible with rest and carry out a technical check on noise levels. The association says legal decibel limits for residential areas must not be exceeded, pointing to families with young children, older people and other neighbours living in the buildings.

Residents say earlier events in the area brought noise and vibrations that made homes “vibrate”. Sound-level records raised serious doubts over whether acoustic limits had been met, they say.

The association also points to months of complaints about noise pollution and the campaign ‘El renou és tortura’. It accuses City Hall of again imposing an event with a major acoustic impact despite knowing of growing anger over noise, overcrowding and intensive use of public space.
